Frequently Asked Questions

What was the logic behind the logo?
  • The primary round form represents the planet.
  • The major latitudes of the Equator and the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn are marked out at their self-confident 23.5 degrees tilt.
  • The subtropical zones of south and north, hybrid places between the Tropics and the temperate zones, form a band around the world.
  • The gridded background represents the patterns of land use in an urbanising world.
  • The colour green is selected to denote the mark of progressive subtropical cities making the transformation to from fossil fuel dependence to liveable, equitable cities of the future.

Most knowledge about contemporary place-making is derived from the temperate climate experience of Europe and North America. Some knowledge of appropriate low climatic design for the tropics is also documented. This conference focuses on the subtropics, places highly diverse in landscape and climate terms, with people and places vastly different in cultural and lifestyle terms, and set for major changes in coming decades as the world grapples with the effects of global warming.
